Types, Care and Considerations for Removable Prostheses

These prosthetic treatments help replace missing teeth and periodontal tissues the patient has lost. In addition to restoring tooth function, removable prostheses in Monterrey help prevent shifting of the teeth the patient still has in good condition

Partial Prostheses

Depending on the number of teeth to be replaced, there are two types of removable dental prostheses in Monterrey: partial prostheses and complete prostheses.

A removable partial denture is a metal framework with several artificial teeth attached at the sides and is made in acrylic or metal–acrylic.

These prostheses usually anchor to the remaining teeth with metal clasps to provide better retention.

They are generally used to rehabilitate the upper arch, which is why the framework is typically covered by a softer pink plastic piece that reduces palatal discomfort.

Complete Prostheses

At times, when the remaining teeth are in very poor condition, complete removable dentures are necessary. To place them, any teeth still in the mouth are extracted, and a denture is fabricated to replace the 14 teeth (wisdom teeth are not usually replaced) of an entire arch

Removable dental prostheses transmit forces to the teeth, gums, and bone, so an adaptation period is required; its duration varies according to the patient and the type of prosthesis

Prosthesis Hygiene and Care

To keep prostheses in good condition and preserve oral health, follow these hygiene and care guidelines

Clean the prostheses at least once a day with a special denture brush to prevent tartar buildup. It’s important to clean the metal components, especially those in contact with teeth.

Remove prostheses for sleeping, so the tissues can rest for a few hours from the pressure they’re subjected to.

To avoid impacts and deformation while they’re out of the mouth, store prostheses in water.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Removable Prostheses

Removable dental prostheses in Monterrey are the most economical restorative option and the perfect alternative for patients with a limited budget who cannot receive dental implants.

However, they do have some disadvantages. The experience with removable prostheses is not the same as with natural teeth, since patients do not regain full bite force, and the acrylic crowns used in this type of prosthesis are less esthetic than implant-supported crowns.

Even though removable prostheses are held by metal clasps on the teeth and by adhesives on the gums, their fit is not perfect, which can cause sores and lesions on the gum tissue.

Although dental implants are the best tooth-replacement option, removable dental prostheses in Monterrey are also a good solution to help patients with missing teeth, taking into account the price–quality relationship.

Removable prostheses are an accessible option to restore your smile.
