How to prevent gum bleeding?

Almost everyone has experienced bleeding gums while brushing at some point. There’s a common misconception that gum bleeding is normal, but it actually indicates an underlying problem.

The main reason gums bleed is the buildup of dental plaque, which can lead to gingivitis (gum inflammation). If it worsens, it may progress to periodontitis and cause tooth loss.

Some people stop brushing when they see blood; however, that’s not recommended. Healthy gums are pink and firm. If they bleed easily, darken in color, and/or swell, it’s important to see a periodontist and maintain good oral hygiene: brush at least twice a day, use dental floss, and rinse with chlorhexidine as directed.

Factors that increase the risk of gum problems:

  • Smoking and alcohol consumption.
  • Diabetes.
  • Weakened immune system due to conditions like HIV or treatments such as chemotherapy.
  • Malnutrition.
  • Stress.
  • Ill-fitting fillings, crowded/overlapping teeth, and poorly fitted dentures.
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Habits such as using a toothbrush with bristles that are too hard or incorrect flossing technique can also cause problems for the teeth and gums.

This article explains that bleeding gums are not normal they are a warning sign of an underlying issue like gingivitis. Ignoring the symptom or stopping brushing is not the solution. To identify the cause of your bleeding and receive the right treatment, a professional evaluation is necessary.
