How did modern implantology begin?

Teeth are vital for living a normal life. Their main function is to grind food and enable proper speech. They also play a major social role: a good set of teeth, besides giving the face a harmonious expression, is a sign of health and well-being.

From the very beginning, humans have sought to replace missing teeth using dental prostheses made from stones and other natural materials. Archaeological findings show replacements not only in the living but also in the deceased, with the intention of beautifying the memory of the person who had passed away.

Surgical and prosthetic procedures for replacing teeth have evolved in step with the constant need to achieve ever more effective results for patients. Today, dental implants offer a high degree of precision, functionality, comfort, and longevity.

How does modern implantology help?

Modern implantology is based on osseointegration, defined as the process by which bone cells adhere to a metal surface.

In the 1960s in Sweden, Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark accidentally discovered a mechanism by which metal bonds to bone. After placing a titanium observation chamber in the tibia of a rabbit to study wound-healing problems, he noticed that the bone had adhered to the metal and demonstrated that titanium can unite with human bone and that, when applied in the mouth, it can serve as a support pillar for dental prostheses.

Building on these concepts, further studies were carried out and, in 1982, Brånemark presented the dental world with osseointegration and his screw-shaped titanium dental implant. This is how modern implantology began.

This article recounts the discovery of osseointegration, the scientific principle that gave rise to modern implantology. Thanks to these advances, today’s dental implants offer a high degree of precision and longevity. This content is historical and informational in nature. To benefit from this technology, an evaluation by a specialist is essential.
